We are delighted to introduce Made:Small with our Archetype Model, crafted at 1:150 scale. This model is designed to be able to represent most homes in the UK, with a maximum allowable size of 30 metres in width, 30 metres in depth and 30 metres in height.

If you’re thinking of treating yourself or a loved one to a bespoke Archetype model, we need a few essential details about your house:

  1. Size confirmation: Please confirm that your house is smaller than 30x30x30 metres; if your home exceeds this size, let us know which part of the house you would like to be modelled

  2. Number of storeys

  3. Building type: let us know if your house is detached, semi-detached or end-terrace, mid-terrace, or if it only has one facade

So, how big is it?

There are a few ways to find out the dimensions of your home.

Using drawings:

Architectural drawings: You may have some drawings of your home produced by an architect if you have had an extension or other works done, these will typically include dimensions or a scale bar.

Sales or lettings drawings: If you kept the plan drawings which went along with the sales or lettings listing, they can be very helpful.

Archive drawings: You may be lucky enough to have hold of old record drawings passed onto you when you bought the house or sourced via your local historic archive centre.

Online maps:

Websites like Google Maps and Bing Maps offer a measuring function which is simple to use.

In Google Maps, for example you can follow these steps:

  • Select the Satellite map type in the bottom left hand corner

  • Navigate to your home

  • Right click and select ‘Measure Distance’ to begin your measurement

  • Left click to end the measurement, providing you with a total distance

This will allow you to measure the width and the depth of the building. To estimate the height of the building, we’d recommend allowing 3 metres per floor plus another 3 metres for the roof.

In-person measurement:

If you prefer a hands-on approach, or the online map imagery is not very clear for your home, you can always get the tape measure out!

For attached properties, measuring the depth may be challenging, and measuring the height can be difficult for multi-storey houses. However, with a few basic measurements, you should be able to determine if your house exceeds the 30x30x30 metre limit.

How many storeys do I have?

Determining the number of storeys in your home is often simple, however with our endlessly varied (and endlessly interesting!) housing stock in the UK, sometimes things are not so straightforward. For example, a bungalow might have dormer roof extensions— does this make it a two-storey house? Or perhaps you live in a house that steps down a hill, has an extension, or a basement.

To simplifying the process of placing your order, we have established a few rules of thumb:

  • Count to the highest storey, for instance if you have a two-storey building with a single-storey extension your house is considered two-storey overall

  • Count only ‘full’ storeys, for example, dormer extensions or half-storeys should not be counted

  • Basements, cellars or attic rooms do not count as storeys

How many faces will you model?

In most cases it is easy to say whether a house is detached or attached in some way to others. You will notice that the cost of the model increases as the level of detachment increases - this is because on a mid-terrace only has two facades, however on a detached home, there are four!

For simplicity, we do not factor in extensions into our prices and are happy to model these as part of the main facade they attach to.

It may be that you only wish for us to model the front of your chosen house, perhaps because you are not able to get hold of photographs of all sides of the house and online maps do not have 3D aerial images in your area. Or perhaps your house only has a single facade - quirky but not impossible! Whatever the reason, we are happy to create a single-sided model, and depending on the style of building, we’ll include the overall ‘mass’ too.

Unsure on anything?

Thanks to the amazing variety of homes we live in, yours might not fit neatly into the categories outlined above. If you have any questions at all prior to ordering, don’t hesitate to get in contact and we’ll be happy to help.

We offer a 25% discount on the cost of the model if you have have scale drawings for us to work from; please email these to us before placing your order and we will send you through an offer code to apply when you make make payment.
